Aldi eats - try this recipe to get your kids to eat cauliflower

Aldi recently had a sale of both cauliflower and pork roast. So I decided to roast the pork and use spices sparingly since I wanted the vegetables to contribute the main flavor. Initially I had planned to use the red cabbage that Aldi had on sale some time ago, but then the cauliflower on sale gave me the idea to prepare cauliflower that way my family had prepared it, if the vegetable had to carry the flavor of the meal.

I cooked the cauliflower in water until it was cooked, but still crisp. I wanted to use the florets whole and not get them all mushy. Once the cauliflower was cooked, I browned a couple of tablespoons of butter in a small skillet and then added breadcrumbs. I did not use flavored breadcrumbs since I used butter and the natural breadcrumbs allow for the butter flavor to come through.

I had previously roasted by pork loin for about 45 minutes at 400oF (for 3lbs). My pork roast had been patted dry with paper towels and gotten a simple covering of freshly ground pepper.

Below is the image of the complete meal.
Since I used no spices with the exception of pepper on the roast, the buttered breadcrumbs are coming through nicely. So if you have kids that do not like cauliflower, try this recipe to see whether it appeals to them.

I had also found a recipe online in which the roast itself was covered in browned breadcrumbs. I suppose you could use Italian-flavored breadcrumbs, but I prefer to traditional breadcrumbs since I like the butter flavor to come through.

Review: SIMPLE skincare line - refreshing facial wash gel

copyright Durhamonthecheap - sample of refreshing facial wash gel
I had posted earlier about the new skincare line that is available at Walgreens - SIMPLE. This line is a big seller in Europe and the full-size Moisturizing facial wash that I received through the shespeaks.com sampling program for bloggers is something that I use now everyday.

To determine what was in the facial wash gel, I went to the UK site for the product line here and found the following information:

The facial wash gel is the perfect blend of ingredients to cleanse the skin thoroughly and revive it. It is great for sensitive skin and contains Pro-Vitamin B5 to soften and gently cleanse the skin.
As with all products from SIMPLE, the facial wash gel does not contain perfume or colors. On the sample tube that I received, it also states that SIMPLE facial wash gel contains no animal-derived ingredients.

You can purchase the SIMPLE products through Walgreens or on Amazon.com.

I used the facial wash gel by SIMPLE now a couple of times since I got the sample and wanted to review it. I am quite happy with it, but I do notice a difference to the moisturizing facial wash that I received through shespeaks.com. This facial gel is not moisturizing and so I follow up with a little bit of my favorite moisturizer. I would recommend adding some moisturizer after you have used the SIMPLE facial wash gel, especially if you routinely use a moisturizer to deal with dry skin. I do not need the moisturizer when I use my SIMPLE moisturizing facial wash.

Bookreview: By Faith, Not By Sight - Scott MacIntyre (former American Idol contestant)

"By Faith, Not By Sight" is an autobiography by Scott MacIntyre, who most people will know from his too short a stint on American Idol some years ago. I do recall Scott appearing on AI because to me he started with the handicap of being blind and competed with others in a show that to me is as much about singing as it is about showmanship. I do not know how much showmanship figured into the voting or the comments that the judges make, but I know that judges tend to mention if a singer could improve in that aspect.
Reading this biography, I learned that Scott is so much more than a singer, he is summa cum laude college graduate, Fulbright scholar and, most importantly, a very strong person. The book starts in the middle and each chapter picks on a specific, personally important, episode, in Scott's life. Overall, he describes his life in a more uplifting language than I had initially anticipated. He covers his scholarship, his love for music, his health and his family in honest and open terms. Not everything is easy, no surprise there, but importantly Scott prevails and in large part because of the support of his family.
Scott MacIntyre certainly has a story to tell and to everyone that keeps asking why me, this book may be a support tool that shows that despite the times asking why me, the more important statement is "I will get through this".
Overall, a well written biography that taught me a lot about the person Scott MacIntyre.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book through booksneeze.com in exchange for an honest review. The opinion expressed in this review are my own and have not been influenced by either booksneeze or the author.
