Influenster Voxbox review: The Jinglebox from December 2015

copyright Durhamonthecheap - Itty Bittys are really cute and high quality from Hallmark!
I love to get Influenster Voxboxes because they always contain a nice mix of products, many of which I am not familiar with. And this Jingle voxbox was no different. Even though I knew some of the products, such as a Kiss lashes and the Biscoff cookies as well as Cetaphil. The Hallmark Itty Bittys were a discovery as was the nail polish - but they matched my favorite color. I love green nail polish. Have a look at the pictures as well as my video unboxing the goodies to see what products were included. Maybe you find something that you are interested in too!
copyright Durhamonthecheap - love the Kiss products, easy to apply and stay on for hours!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - I love these cookies because they have a nice buttery taste.

copyright Durhamonthecheap - Cetaphil is always good in the winter to help with dry skin.

copyright Durhamonthecheap - a nice minty green color, which is perfect for spring!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - some eyeliner pencil in Dark Brown from NYC - really high quality product!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - a coupon for some free tater tots - always welcome
Overall, another great box from Influenster and just in time for the holidays! Thanks to Influenster for bringing some great new products my way as well as some of our family favorites - the tater tots from Ore Ida are always a big hit!

Product Review: The new AVEENO Absolutely Ageless line with moiturizer, night cream and serum

I received from Crowdtap and Aveeno as sample collection of the new Aveeno series Absolutely Ageless, which consisted of a full product for the Intensive Renewal Serum as well as good size samples for the night cream and daily moisturizer.  I have been using the samples now for about a week and love the experience. Since I got a full size product for the serum, I have been sharing that product with the mother, who also thinks the Aveeno Absolutely Ageless is fantastic.

Book Review: Last Act: The Final Years and Emerging Legacy of Ronald Reagan by Craig Shirley

Clearly the author is a fan of the late president, arguing that his presidency had a significant impact on the political landscape and changed how both parties look today. You can probably find as many political pundits arguing that conservatives under Reagan were much less pronounced in their religious tendencies and argued more politics than church. But that is a debate that is beyond the scope of this review. Did Reagan have an influence on the USA that was long-lasting? yes, it was he who was president during the Glasnost time that led to the wall coming down. Movements such as the Solidarity movement may have had a harder time sustaining itself and bringing down communism had a different president been in the White House that was not as expressive in its opposition to communist leadership in Eastern Europe. Reagan formed a strong bond with Mrs. Thatcher, another outspoken anti-communist, and their combined leadership certainly strengthened the forces for democracy in Eastern Europe. Nevertheless, the man had is faults and Reagan as a president was not without errors.

available on amazon.com
But he at the core a very genuine human being and I find that to be most important takeaway from this book. We get to know Reagan as a person, in his private home, during retirement and fighting against an incurable disease. The author manages to tell us about the person of Ronald Reagan, at times blurred by an admiration of the person, but still anecdotes from the life of the late president will entertain many readers who lives through the 80s and admired Reagan as a president or simply his style of politics. This is an opportunity to get to know the president as a person and maybe understand why so many people, from both sides of the political aisle, if not admire him, but find him a decent human being.

Crowdtap sampling: COOL MINT LISTERINE® Antiseptic Mouthwash!

Through Crowdtap I was provided with a sample of a new mouthwash by Listerine - their Cool Mint flavor is excellent in cleaning your mouth, leaving your breath fresh and ensuring gum health. As the name indicated, the flavor is fresh and it does make your mouth feel refreshed, which is great after a meal when like me you have to meet with clients and need that additional assurance that you well prepped and ready.
copyright Durhamonthecheap - Listerine in the bathroom, an essential part of our dental hygiene routine!

copyright Durhamonthecheap -my mother was the lucky person who got to try out Listerine Cool Mint, she is happy!
I had my mother sample the mouthwash and she loved it after only a few days of use. She is now regularly using mouthwash, usually about twice a day, and feels that her mouth feels fresh the whole day.

Crowdtap sampling: AVEENO® SKIN RELIEF GENTLE SCENT™ Lotion and/or Body Wash

copyright Durhamonthecheap - my mother happy with the Skin Relief samples from Aveeno!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - my mother making sure that Aveeno protects her forehead, which tends to have dry skin!
My mother loved the bodywash in particular because it contained coconut and she continues to use the product. I went out and bought her a regular size product because we swear by the effects of coconut oil on skin and so finding a product that contains coconut ensures to us that the product will help with dry skin relief. In addition, the lack of an obvious scent to the product is good for users such as my mother that loves to regularly use perfume.

Product Review: Sweet n Low cocktail creations - my favorite Mexican Coffee now easier on the figure!

Through Crowdtap, I received a gift and sample pack containing Sweet N Low as well as some coasters and recipe suggestions. I wanted to try out how Sweet N low instead of regular sugar would gift my drink mixes. I prefer sweet coffees for a comfortable night in and so the calories, while not extraordinary high, are definitely something to consider, especially if the coffee goes with some pie. In my case, we had a night in with some Key Lime Pie and then adding some coffee was nit good for the figure.
I also made some other cocktails, such as a mix between cranberry orange that could have gin added or not - depending on how long you wanted your night to be. We opted for the fruit mix without alcohol and added Sweet N Low for extra sweetness - it turned out delicious!
My personal favorite substitution was adding Sweet N Low instead of sugar to my Mexican Cinnamon Coffee. I prep some milk with cinnamon sticks to infuse a light cinnamon flavor into the milk and then add half and half milk to strong coffee to make cinnamon-flavored coffee. Because I like to add 2% milk, the calories saved with my Sweet N Low come in handy and the coffee still tastes like the original recipe.

Crowdtap sampling: Splenda now available in granulated form - even closer to real sugar than before!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - my Splenda in granulated form, you can use it just like regular sugar
I received through Crowdtap a new version of Splenda. Often when using sugar substitute, the texture is not quite that of sugar; the substitute always seems like a light powder in contrast to the very granulated sugar that has little crystals. Now Splenda comes in granulated form as well, making the switch to a healthy sugar substitute even easier. I received this box sample and right away started using it in hot beverage, like a really tastyy, but low calorie mocha beverage that was missing none of the falvor of the original, but a lot of calories (and guilt).
copyright Durhamonthecheap -use it in hot or cold beverages, like the mocha above
I also used it on a mixed  salad, where Splenda gave an interesting note to the pastrami topping and enhanced the flavor.
copyright Durhamonthecheap - - add it to salads for some sweetness - a mixed salad with pastrami
But of course the real test was a dessert such as the apple pie. Loved to include Splenda and especially since I was able to serve the sugar substitute in my little sugar server next to milk, which made for a very traditional and festive table setting, but the modern trend to healthy eating was present too!
copyright Durhamonthecheap - and of course dessert - like a guilt-free apple pie

Book Review: The Four Dimensions of Extraordinary Leadership by Jenni Catron

This book ties great leadership in with Christian belief. This is not surprising because the author is a church leader and so she feels that leadership theory can be found be interpreting in the commandment to love the lord with all heart and soul and mind and strength. It is these four legs listed in the commandment that she feels are needed for someone to become a great leader. And by extension, everyone that is a Christian and believes in the commandment can become a great leader.
She argues that leadership in relationship can be found through following your heart, while the soul should be followed for spiritual leadership and the mind for managerial leadership (or what I call rational leadership). Lastly, strength she argues is needed for visionary leadership.

While I believe that strength to be a leader and fight at times against the odds can be found through religion, I am not totally convinced by her arguments put forward in this book. To me, the theory shown in the book is too hard trying to make a case for these four different components of leadership and while I believe that a leader has to have strength, vision, a sound mind and can exceed at building relationships, the connection between leadership and this one commandment seems far-fetched.

I like the message of the book that everyone can be a leader, which I believe for the most part to be true. But this author is trying too hard in my opinion to make a case that the philosophy of leadership is found in the bible. Overall, the book is an interesting read for this wanting to learn more about leadership philosophies. but you have to keep an open mind when approaching this book. To me, it was too much interested in making a case for how important believing in the bible is rather than making a case for what makes a great leader.

Crowdtap sampling event: AVEENO ULTRA-CALMING Nourishing Night Cream

I received samples of the AVEENO ULTRA-CALMING Nourishing Night Cream through Crowdtap and started using my sample about two weeks ago. I also gave a sample to my mother (pictured below) and one of my friends to see how they liked the product. We all loved the product. Not only does it work, it does so in a way that even our quite sensitive skin does not suffer. We apply it once daily before going to bed and then wake up after only one week of use with a skin that feels and looks younger. The skin is more elastic, not as dry (something that especially my mother commented on) and it has a more healthy glow.

copyright Durhamonthecheap - my mother with her sample and she is happy with its effects.
Overall, we all three can highly recommend this product. The product is available in stores right now, but can also be purchased online. The price is around $15 for 1.7 oz, but it truly worth it. It does calm your skin and contains all natural ingredients, which is important to me since I many chemicals simply prove too irritating on my skin for long-term use. Aveeno used oat and calming feverfew and no redness or any other irritation is visible.
The Aveeno product is http://www.aveeno.com/product/ultra-calming-night-cream.do, have a look and give it a try. We can only highly recommend it and keep enjoying our samples before we go out and purchase some more!

Book Review: Churchill's Trial: Winston Churchill and the Salvation of Free Government by Dr. Larry Arnn

As someone who has always been intrigued by Churchill, I was excited to find another book about this great and controversial statesman. While I think that Churchill was a great politician, who had a lot of foresight about developments involving the power balance between Russia and the USA and its effects on Europe, I do not think that he was the most important politician of the 20th century as the author states. Churchill was involved in politics long before WW2II and had a life that sought controversy from the Boer War through WWI and finally WWII. In some decision he was right, eerily seeming to know what the future would being, in other decisions he was wrong and cost many people their lives. He was a great leader, that I agree with the author, but like all great leaders he had to also learn from his earlier mistakes. I am setting up the review with this rather long statement because the author does focus on only one aspect of Churchill's work and life, so anyone not familiar with his life may want to take a step back ever so often and reread a section because this book tackles complex subjects using Churchill as an example.
As stated, this author is focused on one specific aspect of Churchill's life and work, namely his thoughts on free government in various times such as war and peace. This book is somewhat philosophical, but also historical because Churchill's view does evolve. This evolution of political thinking is expected because Churchill did make mistakes and what made him great as a politician was his ability to learn and adapt. Did his thought-process fundamentally change? No, but it evolved. I thought this author did a great job with this book. Not only did he pick a wonderful politician as an example (using Churchill's involvement in several wars and political action in peace times), but he also managed to lay out a clear image of how free government must differ between war and peace time and must consider treaties and changing nation states into account. Churchill not only lived through the experiences of a guerrilla war in South Africa through a traditional war in WWI to the advent of modern weaponry in WWII, but he also saw major changes in the British Empire happen that were independent of the war, but certainly influenced some of his decision in war and peace.
Overall, for anyone interested in Churchill, this book is a good add-on to have and have read. But also people who seek to understand how free government can work in various times, will find this book interesting to read.

Book Review: In Plain Sight by Fern Michaels

For years Myra Rutledge and Annie de Silva, founding members of the Sisterhood, have funded an underground network run by former Supreme Court Justice Pearl Barnes to help women escape abusive relationships. When two of Pearl’s clients fail to report for their weekly check-in, the Sisterhood and their allies begin a search for French model Amalie Laurent and her one-time maid, Rosalee Muno. Amalie’s estranged husband, Lincoln Moss, is a distant cousin of the President of the United States and one of his closest advisers. Moss’s power is matched by the violent streak he hides from the world, and he beat Amalie viciously until she finally escaped with her maid’s help. Moss is accustomed to doing exactly what he wants without fear of consequence. But Moss has never faced an adversary like the Sisterhood…

Crowdtap: Kleenex Poacket Packs

Through Crowdtap I received a sample of Kleenex Pocket Packs in three vibrant covers. They come in handy when you are on the go and need to blow your nose, fix a bloody knee or wipe a little spill in the car. Editorial: Why Barack Obama may have made it harder for Hillary to become president

Rarely touch on outright politics on this blog, but with the first democractic debate coming up and people seeing Bernie Sanders as representing the true left, while doubting Hillary's ability to be president and questioning her character, I wondered why Hillary as the potential first female president would have such a hard time. (I know that there is a Republic candidate out there as well, but right now Carly Fiorina is not as close to winning that nomination as Hillary is on the Democratic side).
With many countries having had female leaders and Germany having had Merkel for many year holding the political reign, is it true that the USA is not ready for a female president? Many people thought that a US president had to be white and male until Obama got elected and it seemed as having a non-white president may seem more of a hurdle to overcome than being female.
So why is Hillary still having a hard time convincing people that she is fit to be president? Is the email server on the side and mixing personal and official emails such a dealbreaker? After all, we forgave her husband an affair while in office. One would think that a country now used to a nonwhite president would easily now see a female president as a given.
Yet it seems that Hillary is more tightly watched, heavily criticized than her male counterparts on either side of the aisle. Is it because now that the country has shown its open-mindedness by accepting Barack Obama as a president, it can go back to business as usual and favor the white male candidates? Is the achievement of having accepted a president that did not fit the traditional presidential image enough of an achievement to pad ourselves on the shoulder and settle for the traditional presidential image? To me that almost seems to be the case. Bernie Sanders' donations are made up of very small, but many donors, suggesting that he is somewhat of a populist candidate that represents a grassroots movements. But how about the traditional Democratic donors? There is a movement to nominate Biden, almost begging him to run, despite a clear need for privacy by Biden. So why does the Democratic establishment not settle for Hillary as their candidate and still hold back on donating? Biden, but many accounts an easy target for Republican attacks because of his verbal faux pas tendencies, has not decided to run, has suffered personal tragedies recently that one would expect Democratic supporters respect, and yet we see ads being created inducing him to run, reporters asking constantly about the decision and pundits arguing when is too late to make a decision. There will be five candidates at the Democratic debate, more than enough to show a variety of views and provide opportunity for discussion. While Sanders and Hillary seem at this point the only real candidates with a shot at the nomination, there is no reason to think that a choice of two is not enough. Republicans were criticized for having too many, Democrats it seems want at least one more.
To me, both the Biden join the race campaign and the attacks on Hillary indicate that the Democratic establishment is not ready to accept Hillary as a president. I do not think that this is because she is Hillary because certainly her husband had more issues with character and honesty than she does. I do believe though that after having shown to the world that the USA is ready for a nonwhite president, the Democratic supporters feel they have done enough to show their open-mindedness and prefer to go back to politics as usual and settle for a male white president. Enough with these experiments, we have proven how accepting we are of others, let's settle for the known and not take any risks. In that way, Barack Obama may have made it more difficult for a female president and sadly, looking at the rest of the world, the USA is still lagging in accepting presidents that may not fit the traditional picture.

Crowdtap sampling: Johnsonville Fully Cooked Breakfast Sausage

Through Crowdtap I was able to sample a new product by Johnsonville. They have come out with a fully cooked breakfast sausage that comes in original flavor (our family favorite) as well as Turkey and Maple. The local Harris Teeter only carried the Turkey and original flavor, which suited us just fine because we absolutely love the original flavor variety.

Influenster Voxbox: Apple & Eve VoxBox

Through Influenster I was able to sample a collection of products by Apple and Eva. They product organic juices that are much lower in sugar than many competitor brands. I got 1l of apple juice, which looked and tasted like freshly pressed apple juice. It was slightly cloudy and listed as natural - it truly tasted like juiced apples. We loved it on its own, but also enjoyed it mixed with frozen fruit and some yogurt as a breakfast smoothie.
In addition to the apple juice, I also received three quenchers, which are little juice boxes. These are perfect for lunch boxes for young and old and came in three fantastic flavors. Our favorite was the Fruit Punch Burst. This product has 50% less sugar than the leading regular juice because it is naturally sweetened and is truly a healthy fruit punch flavor.

Crowdtap Sampling: Folgers Flavors in 4 different wonderful addictive varieties

I love Folgers coffee and so I was excited to get to sample the new Folgers Flavors, which come in 4 varieties: Vanilla, Hazelnut, Caramel and Mocha. It is hard to pick a favorite because all of the varieties add great flavor to your coffee. But I think I prefer vanilla because it goes well with the light blends of coffee that I usually drink. Since I like to drink a lot of coffee throughout the day, I usually have light blends and now with Flavors by Folgers I can add variety to my coffee.

copyright Durhamonthecheap - great selection of flavors in the mail!

copyright Durhamonthecheap - ready for the enhanced morning coffee

copyright Durhamonthecheap - a splash of Vanilla to the coffee for a luxurious coffee experience

copyright Durhamonthecheap - best thing, now your decaf can be turned into vanilla or caramel too!
I love the fact that you can add flavor to decaf and regular coffee is great because my mother needs to drink decaf and usually can only find regular coffee with flavor. So she has been drinking her coffee without flavor for years,  but now she is thoroughly enjoying playing flavor mixer with her coffee. She likes vanilla as well, but will often mix equal squirts of vanilla with caramel for a more complex falvor. Which brings up a great benefit of Folgers Flavors, you can add as much and as little flavor as you wish and you can mix flavors. So the cup of coffee in the morning is now really turning into an individual experience that you can suit your taste.
I love the fact that Folgers Flavors come in small bottles that can be easily packed into a purse and so I have my flavored coffee on the go. Some days I will pack my Hazelnut or Caramel and enjoy flavorful Caramel coffee courtesy of Folgers all days long. I love it!

Product Review: LISTERINE® ULTRACLEAN® Floss

Through Crowdtap I got an opportunity to try out a new floss by Listerina. It is called Ultraclean and the name is appropriate. I used this floss, even though I am more used to flossticks.  But because it is from Listerine and I have had very good experiences with the brand, I trusted that their floss would be good too.

I tried it out and unlike other dental floss, this one is sturdy and cleans well, but does not cut into fingers and still gets all the dirt out. For the first time I felt that my teeth and gums were really being massaged and not turn to shreds and so I was happy. I also felt that my mouth was fresher after the flossing and so rather than dread this daily exercise in getting string through my teeth, this floss was truly a massage for my gums. I can highly recommend this floss and the size is perfect to carry around in your purse for in between meal emergencies.
