Product Review: Chocolate Twinkies by Hostess

So I eat Twinkies from time to time - my guilty pleasure, but heck, I am only human, so something unhealthy must enter my stomach from time to time. I was now selected by Viewpoints to sample something new by Hostess, Chocolate Twinkies! Googling for Chocolate Twinkies, I turned up search results that indicate that they had a prior attempt at this several years ago, but people were turned off by the white color of the filling - which chocolate lover expects regular chocolate to be white and so Hostess must have gone back to drawing board.

I tried one of the chocolate twinkies and shared them also with a couple of co-workers since I by no means an experienced twinkie eater and I wanted all the expertise I could get on this product.

One of my co-workers came back saying that vanilla ones are definitely better. These twinkies did not have enough chocolate taste. My other co-worker came back and said he liked them and did not comment on the lack of chocolate flavor.
So when it was my turn I could definitely approach the issue unbiased.

I split one in half to see how much filling I had. It looked like a good amount of chocolate creme to me and so I expected a taste similar to a yellow cake with chocolate frosting. I had to admit that I was somewhat disappointed. The chocolate flavor did not really come through. I tasted cake and something sweet, but I could not clearly identify the flavor as chocolate. I am not going to buy them again, certainly not when I am in the mood for chocolate. Maybe Hostess should think about a dark chocolate filling to better bring out the chocolate flavor and suit more the tastebuds of the chocolate lovers that will gravitate towards a chocolate twinkie rather than a vanilla twinkie.
